In a disaster type of scenario, the ability to communicate with your members of your family, friends, neighbors, community becomes imperative in determining their safety. In an disaster situation, chances are you will not have access to phones, whether they are landlines or cell.
For short distances, FRS and GMRS radios are a good source of getting in touch with others who are nearby, as in a 2-5 mile range depending on your radio (hand held vs. mobile vs. base station) and “line of sight” meaning is it wide open range or hilly, mountainous terrain, etc.
Longer distance communication could be had using amateur radios (commonly referred to “ham radios.”) which also requires a license to operate. If you have family not in close proximity, getting your amateur radio licenses as a family is totally feasible.
